‘Life Sustaining’? You’ve Got It Wrong, Governor!

Michigan’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer, continues to make headlines with her restrictions on what people can and cannot do during this time of social isolation and distancing.

Though she has implemented restrictions on people’s freedoms—including halting elective medical procedures—so that others don’t get sick and inundate the hospital system, she has allowed abortion facilities to stay open. In fact, she called abortion businesses “life sustaining.” In a recent podcast, Whitmer said, “A woman’s health care, her whole future, her ability to decide if and when she starts a family is not an election, it is fundamental to her life. . . .  It is life sustaining and it’s something that government should not be getting in the middle of.”

We know where her alliances lie, as one news service just reminded us by reprinting a two-year-old tweet Whitmer wrote that adjoined a selfie of her wearing a red hat with the words “Planned Parenthood makes America great” imprinted on it.

It’s both sickening and farcical to hear the governor refer to an act that kills a tiny baby as life sustaining. Abortion means the death of a child—a death by gruesome means. Obviously there is nothing life sustaining about it.

Easter life

Whitmer’s words come at a time of the year when we are rejoicing the most amazing gift ever given to us. We are in the Easter season. Just a week and a half ago, our Lord allowed Himself to be brutalized, broken, beaten, and killed. He did that for you. He did that for me.

His actions were truly life sustaining.

They were life sustaining because His death freed us from sin. His death opened the door to eternal life. His death gave us a chance at life with Him forever.

Whitmer’s abuse of those two words is like a slap in the face—to both Christ and His children.

Our lives and the gift of eternal life are not things we should ever take for granted. Every day we must thank Christ for His gift and work toward eternal salvation. Every day we must look at our world and ask ourselves, How can I make this better? What can I do to change the culture to one of life?

Just as Christ’s gifts are life sustaining, so must our faith be. Only through faith will we attain eternal life. Every day we must strengthen our faith and let it guide our actions. Not only must we pray, read Christ’s words, and learn about the saints, but we must follow their examples and change our behavior so that we are doing God’s work here on Earth. Our actions must become life sustaining—for ourselves, for our families, and for our communities. Caring for the most vulnerable among us—the elderly, the sick, and preborn babies—must remain our top priority. We must save others to save ourselves.

We know that Whitmer is wrong to say that abortion is life sustaining, for we know the true meaning of those words. And we know that abortion kills. Each and every time.

It is up to us to make sure people understand that.
