Why does Senator [now Vice Presidentelect] Biden get away with causing scandal to the Church [by supporting abortion]? It seems that the bishop is afraid of him… The Catholic bishops speak, but they do nothing to stop the scandal that is being caused by the Catholic voters that will vote for “a woman’s right to choose.” I am truly questioning my Catholic faith… I can’t evangelize with this hypocrisy that is going on right now… I know you will probably tell me to go to confession. Seriously, what am I to do?

Five years ago, American Life League began a campaign to focus attention on protecting Christ in the Eucharist from scandal (see www.Canon915.org ), precisely because we were asking the same questions you are now asking.
This is also why Pope Benedict XVI when he was still Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and the prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, wrote a brilliant memo to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops about why and how such despicable politicians should be denied Holy Communion.
But to this very day, the majority of bishops—all but 16—have done little or nothing to protect Christ from this scandal. They have not been a single, united voice echoing what the Holy Father told them in his memo.
There is an old saying, which goes like this: You can bring a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. Applying it to this situation, I would say, you can make a bishop aware of what is right, but you cannot force him to act on it.
This is very sad indeed. In my humble opinion, you do not have to go to confession for asking questions that cry out to heaven for an answer. Please pray for our bishops.
