The encyclical, Humanae Vitae (HV, Pope Paul VI, 1968), is a blessing to the pro-life movement. It is a message of love and hope that helps us show others the way in this confused world in which we live today.
Pro-life people understand that human sexuality is an amazing gift from God and HV explains this in a wonderful way. Human sexuality is designed by God to make it possible, according to His plan, for man and woman within the sanctity of marriage to unite as one and to procreate children (See HV 12; CCC 1601-1658).
We also know that when God gives His gifts he also requires us to understand the intended purpose for which the gift is given. This is why actions that are contrary to His purpose as expressed in natural and divine law always result in sin, suffering, and death.
Pope Paul VI wrote that married couples, united with God, can live “the task of making visible to men and women the holiness and joy of the law which united inseparably their love for one another and the cooperation they give to God’s love, God who is the Author of human life.”
Sadly, far too many people have chosen to ignore this truth but choose instead to abuse their sexuality, ignore the natural law and devote themselves with abandon to embracing sexual sin, including the ready use of aborting the preborn when their contraception fails.
Though it is clear to us that there is a definite connection between contraception (violates union) and abortion (violently destroys procreation), many are not willing to see it and in fact deny that connection at every turn. This is what makes Humanae Vitae such a blessing to us as it explains these things in a profound way.
This is why American Life League has worked tirelessly for nearly 40 years to teach the truths found in Humanae Vitae and more recently in Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life). We know that, without God and His laws, there can be no solution to the dreadful carnage caused by contraception, abortion and everything that follows from it.
We are challenged to make a difference by teaching the truth, especially when and where it is least popular. Let’s remember these important words of Pope Paul VI in Humanae Vitae:
“… man cannot attain that true happiness for which he yearns with all the strength of his spirit, unless he keeps the laws which the Most High God has engraved in his very nature. These laws must be wisely and lovingly observed.”
Shine your light and join us in teaching these profound truths, a recipe for everlasting happiness and joy!
