For the last couple of years, Planned Parenthood and many like-minded groups have been pushing for widespread distribution of EC. EC is the acronym for emergency contraception. It is also known as the morningafter pill or MAP, and by its brand name, Plan B.
EC is intended to be taken within 72-hours of “unprotected sex” to “prevent pregnancy.” It is important to know that EC is different than RU-486, which is taken during the first seven weeks of pregnancy to kill the baby that is already implanted in her mother’s womb. EC will not affect a baby that has already implanted.
That is not to say that EC doesn’t kill babies in the womb; it just does it earlier. According to its manufacturer, EC works in one of three ways:
- By preventing ovulation
- By preventing fertilization, if ovulation does take place
- By preventing implantation, if fertilization happens
It is the third method of operation that will result in the death of a newly-created person. A unique human being is created at fertilization and will implant in her mother’s womb five to seven days later. If she can’t implant, she dies.
But, you may ask, if EC sometimes allows fertilization to occur, how can Planned Parenthood say it prevents pregnancy? The answer comes from language changes implemented by the culture of death. Back in 1965, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists redefined pregnancy as beginning at implantation, not at fertilization. This created a cover-up for millions of babies to die before they could implant, and thus nobody counts their deaths.
Plan B, one type of EC, has been available by prescription for a number of years, but now Planned Parenthood wants it to be available over the counter—in your supermarket and thousands of other places.
And that’s what the fuss is all about. American Life League is working to prevent Plan B from becoming available over the counter and, in fact, we are trying to get it withdrawn from the market altogether. A product that kills babies does not belong in American stores.
We ask all our readers to help inform your churches and other organizations about the dangers that EC in general, and Plan B in particular, pose to preborn persons. The American public needs to know the truth. For a free sample copy of our Emergency Contraception brochure, call the resource department at 540-659-4171.
Together, we can save babies in the womb.
